USDOT Numbers for Commercial Motor Carriers

USDOT numbers are issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for commercial motor carriers that operates in interstate commerce, and in most states, intrastate commerce.  You will need to check the specific requirements for your state. The FMCSA Online Quiz is a simple and convenient way to find out if you are required to have a USDOT number.

Some indicators that you may need a USDOT number include:

  • Your company operates in interstate commerce
  • Your company has vehicles that transport more than 10,000 lbs. of cargo
  • Your company has vehicles that transport hazardous materials
  • You are required to cross state borders during transport
  • You deliver between destinations in one state but the products originate outside of that state
  • You transport between 9-15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • You transport 16 or more passengers

Requirements for Displaying your USDOT Number on your Vehicle

  • The number must be permanently affixed to the vehicle (not to a removable component of the vehicle, such as the trailer).
  • Although FMCSA does not specify a minimum size, sign industry standards recommend a minimum of 2" in height (some states require larger numbers) and a contrasting color to the vehicle to be readable from a distance of 50 feet in daylight conditions.
  • A simple easy-to-read font should be used.
  • The letters "USDOT" must precede the number, and certain states also require the state abbreviation to be added after the USDOT number.
